End of financial year checklist for separated couples

Author: Carol Pages, Pages Family Law.

As the end of the 2025 financial year approaches, it is important for separated or recently divorced couples to review their financial position – particularly if you are involved in a family law property settlement or financial disclosure process.

Whether you’re finalising your separation or still working through the division of assets, here are key end-of-financial-year (EOFY) considerations to help you stay on top of your obligations and support your family law matter.

Key EOFY considerations for separated couples:

  • Declare trust distributions

Ensure all distributions from family trusts are correctly declared and documented before 30 June. These may impact your overall income position and your property pool.

  • Review income splitting arrangements

Reassess any income splitting strategies that were in place prior to separation to ensure they are still valid and appropriate.

  • Check superannuation contributions

Review all superannuation contributions made during the financial year. Accurate superannuation figures are essential when calculating the total asset pool in a family law property settlement.

  • Update business financials

Ensure all financial records for your business are current. This information may be used as part of a business valuation if a valuation is required in your matter.

  • Check your private health status

Ensure your private health insurance details are up to date and any changes are correctly reflected.

Why EOFY planning matters in family law

Having accurate and current financial information at EOFY can assist in:

  • ● Providing up to date and accurate financial disclosure
  • ● Streamlining your property settlement negotiations
  • ● Providing your lawyer and accountant with clear documentation
  • ● Reducing delays in family court proceedings

Proactive EOFY planning gives both parties greater certainty about their financial obligations and makes it easier to negotiate fair and informed outcomes.
